How to Know if Your Window Needs a Valance

Different windows have different requirements. When it comes to interior decorating, you have to get familiar with some design ideas that could potentially add stylish aspects to your home. Many are familiar with what the touch of curtains could do for your home, but unfamiliar with how a valance adds design flair. Here’s how chic window valance ideas can spice up your home.

What’s A Window Valance?

If you’ve ever noticed material that covers the uppermost part of the window and usually paired with blinds or curtains, then chances are you’re familiar with a valance, also referred to as window top treatments. Most valances are made of either a soft fabric that is draped, gathered or folded, covering the uppermost part of the window, swooping across the top. The touch of a valance is usually strictly for decorative purposes (not offering any privacy features) but can hide any unattractive curtain rods or any window trim you’re wishing to cover. What’s best about this design aspect is the color or pattern, creating balance and touch to your open windows. They can be paired with curtains or blinds or by itself. It’s all up to what you prefer.

Different Styles

Valances come in an infinite number of styles and go by different names, but there are four basic designs from which all other models extract inspiration from. The four basic styles include:

Pleated – The pleated valances consist of a design similar to a pleated skirt with tailored, crisp edges.

Tabbed – This requires a drapery pole, as the tabs march along with the rod intervals, creating an added design with unusual rods and finials.

Balloon – The balloon style valance sounds a lot like its name, being that it’s like a big poofy skirt that billows out at the top of the windows.

Gathered – The gathered style is styled with longer pieces of material that are pushed together along a rod to create folds that appear like a gathered skirt.
